Register for IT in three easy steps...




STEP 1...  Become familiar with this website.
  

IT is likely that this website can answer any questions you may have.  Our impressive line-up of innovative teachers  and thinkers is complete.  Explore the conference website to become familiar with your options.  Most importantly...review the following agenda and begin to choose which sessions you'd like to attend.   



STEP 2...   Register online...it's easy.  Each individual attending IT will need to complete this process.

Click on "REGISTER FOR IT" at the bottom of this page to start the online registration process. 

You will receive an email confirmation of your selections.

Your district will be invoiced $125 per participant per day.  You can also select within the registration process to include lodging at Holiday Valley ($92) and/or  Cancellation must be provided in writing to Tim Cox ( [email protected] ) prior to July 1, 2011 to avoid invoicing.  Early invoicing is available by contacting Laurie Sledge (716-376-8357) prior to June 1, 2011.

Remember...all costs are listed before BOCES aid.

And for CABOCES components... stipends can be reimbursed through your BOCES 529 COSER.

SESSION ONE:  Innovative Tools and Innovative Techniques - Multiple Locations
Western New York’s most innovative teachers will highlight innovative PreK-12 teaching, instruction, and leadership from our own region.  Experience deep connection to amazing classrooms in a menu of one-hour session choices.  Hear, first hand, how educators in our region have embodied 21st century learning in their classrooms, integrated innovative 21st century tools and specific strategies into learning.  Choose one session during registration.  Seating is limited.

Power Tools & Poems:  The Changing Value of Work in the Global Economy - Madonna Figura - Wellsville Central School
Besides earning a living, what meaning does work have in our 21st century lives?  Senior English students at Wellsville High School explored this essential question through a wide variety of nonfiction texts, literature, personal interviews, a field trip, and digital resources.  See how core and 21st century reading and writing skills came together as students produced projects that were literary, digital, and personal.  For English 9-12, Social Studies 9-12, Business Courses.

Architects of Learning: The Role of the 21st Century Educator - Rachel Wagner - Tonawanda City Schools
The role of the teacher has not changed much in the last century.  Walk into any classroom and the teacher will be directing the learning, disseminating information, reviewing a worksheet, and assigning homework.  The students will be sitting passively listening, taking notes/filling graphic organizers, and engaged in one on one conversation with the teacher.  Our science class is structured to encourage student exploration of current scientific issues, offer innovative solutions and a platforms for communication of ideas.  Join me in learning how to be the "guide on the side" while actively engaging students with Web 2.0 tools. Suitable for all grade levels.

Flipping Your Classroom - Geoff Olson (Randolph Central School)
There has been a lot of news coverage on Khan Academy and using videos from this site in classrooms and to flip classrooms.  This session will focus on using video lessons to flip a classroom, where students take notes at home, then practice in class with the teacher as a guide/tutor.  We will discuss the advantages of flipping a class and what to do with your class time when you no longer need to give notes.  We will also explore Khan Academy and his videos, find videos from other sources, and learn ways to create videos.  Most importantly, you will see student reactions to flipping a classroom.

Moodle, Voicethread, Embedded Video Clips, Videoconference Equipment - Betsy Hardy (CABOCES) and Suzana Baker (Ellicottville Central School)

Come witness how an innovative teacher connects two classrooms each day through media-rich, personal instruction.  Via web-based and videoconference technologies, students collaborate in real time to learn Russian.  Observers will gain tips, tricks, and techniques on how to engage students in a rigorous yet interactive environment.

iPad Integration: A Practical Overview - Rob Miller (Erie 1 BOCES) and Chris Cappelletti (Cuba-Rushford Central School)

Come and see what kinds of project based learning activities were developed for use in a middle school social studies classroom as well as other content areas (grades 1-12). Participants will leave with ideas of how to integrate iPads into their classrooms.  What apps can you use?  How do you plan for this implementation?  Come and find out. 

Building Blocks: An Elementary Ed Tech Approach - Mark Carls (CABOCES) and JamieLynn Griffith (Randolph Central School)
Thinking 2nd grade is too young to have kids utilizing technology?  Join us to learn about some free web tools JamieLynn Griffith of Randolph, NY uses to engage her students to push their thinking and showcase their learning in our new digital world.

iPod Touches in Medieval Times - Dave Mileham (Erie 1 BOCES) and Karen Kondrick (Ripley Central School)
Participants in this workshop will learn about the Erie 1 BOCES/WNYRIC Pilot Project conducted at the Ripley School District in the Spring of 2011. The workshop will focus on the successful integration of iPod Touches in a 1-1 project based classroom. Workshop participants will be taken through the process used to plan lessons centered on the integration of Reading Fluency and the Content strand of Medieval Times in Social Studies. Included in this workshop demonstration will be all of the applications used in the classroom to create comic strips, movies and innovative ways to distribute and collect assignments to and from students. 

Microsoft Mouse Mischief & Itouch Control! - Phill Miano (Erie 1 BOCES) and Steven Sabo (Tonawanda City Schools)
Mouse Mischief integrates into Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 and Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007, letting you insert questions, polls, and drawing activity slides into your lessons. Students can actively participate in these lessons by using their own mice to click, circle, cross out, or draw answers on the screen." (microsoft.com) 

In this session we will overview the steps A to Z to use this amazing tool.  You will be actively engaged in this session using both wireless mouse and Ipod Touches, provided.  If you have an Ipod Touch or Iphone you are encouraged to bring your device.  Also, you are welcome to bring your own laptop with Office 07 & Windows 7 installed and we can assist in getting you up and running with Mouse Mischief.

We will also showcase how to use the Ipod Touches as an input device letting students edit documents on your classroom screen in real time, from their desks! 


Non-linguistic Representations - Infusing Technology in the Classroom in a Non-Linguistic Way! - Valentina Ess (Erie 1 BOCES) and Laura Pacos (Kenmore City Schools)
Have you ever wondered how to put the pieces together? We may have some answers for you.  During our presentation  we will  showcase  ways of how technology and    Non-Linguistic  Representation together can empower student learning in a second grade class.

Setting Objectives and Providing Feedback - Elizabeth Fisher (Erie 1 BOCES) and Linda Harrington (Starpoint Central School District)
Stop students whining, "What are we doing today?" in an instant. See how one teacher transformed her teaching and started communicating lesson objectives and providing feedback to ensure student success. It has made all the dfference.

Cues, Questioning and Advance Organizers - Answer me this? How do I question, engage, and organize my students all at once?!  - Tiffany Giannicchi (CABOCES) and Lauren Carnahan (Randolph Central School)
Questioning, engagement, and organization in the classroom is brought to at whole new level through variety! Come see real life examples and how the 21st century classroom has changed!   Participants will learn cues, questioning and advance organizer techniques to facilitate high levels of thinking to enhance student understanding.  Participants will engage in activities that will help their students use background knowledge to learn new information and to help gain a deeper understanding of critical information.   Student work samples and advance organizer templates will be provided as a model to take away.

Similarities and Differences - Using Compare and Contrast in the Elementary Classroom - Mellisa Devitt (CABOCES) and Mike Stepnick (Pioneer Central School)
Comparing and contrasting is a highly critical way to think. In this session you will learn why focusing on compare and contrast will improve the way your students learn.


Bridging the Reality Gap with Project Based Learning - Brian Crawford (CABOCES) and Kirsten Grube (Cattaraugus Little Valley)
Join us as we take a look inside key elements of Project Based Learning.  You can expect to take away examples of working projects and a new, more authentic framework for teaching and learning.    So take a minute and ask yourself, "Where can PBL take my students?"

We all have a story to tell.  These Innovative Thinkers walk among us from our own region and have incredible stories.  They are products of our educational system and have impacted our world in innovative ways.  What can we learn about our profession from these success stories?  Choose one session during registration.  Seating is limited.  
     

          "Creativity + Community = Opportunity" Meg Saligman, Artist (Olean City Schools Alumni) - From her first mural in  Olean, New York, Ms.   Saligman's public art has garnered acclaim on the world stage.  In places near and far, including Philadelphia, Louisianna, Nebraska,  Dubai and Mexico City;  Ms Saligman's work has been hugely influential in the art world and within communities. 
        "The Dirt on Dirt" - Dr. Kevin Spigel, Geoscientist (Portville Central School Alumni) - Dr. Spigel's research interests are focused on lake sedimentation, environmental change, and geomorphology with emphasis on the role weather, climate, and vegetation change, and fire on landscape processes involving erosion and sedimentation in river and lake systems.  Dr. Spigel is Assistant Professor at Unity College in the Department of Geosciences.
            "The Sweet Smell of Success"Randy Sprague, Entrepreneur (Portville Central School Alumni) - Creator, owner, and operator of Sprague's Maple Farms, Randy Sprague has impacted a rural community in a tremendous way.  Sprague's Maple Farms makes a variety of maple products, including syrup, maple cream, maple sugar, jelly, and granulated maple sugar. 

          “The Creative Compass: Finding One’s Path in the Arts” – Jennifer Andrews, Visual Artist (Fillmore Central School Alumni)  - Painter and public sculptor, Ms. Andrews aims to create artwork that connects people to their cultural and natural histories in new ways.
