Architects of Learning: The Role of the 21st Century Educator - Rachel Wagner - Tonawanda City Schools
The role of the teacher has not changed much in the last century. Walk into any classroom and the teacher will be directing the learning, disseminating information, reviewing a worksheet, and assigning homework. The students will be sitting passively listening, taking notes/filling graphic organizers, and engaged in one on one conversation with the teacher. Our science class is structured to encourage student exploration of current scientific issues, offer innovative solutions and a platform for communication of ideas. Join me in learning how to be the "guide on the side" while actively engaging students with Web 2.0 tools. Suitable for all grade levels.

There has been a lot of news coverage on Khan Academy and using videos from this site in classrooms and to flip classrooms. This session will focus on using video lessons to flip a classroom, where students take notes at home, then practice in class with the teacher as a guide/tutor. We will discuss the advantages of flipping a class and what to do with your class time when you no longer need to give notes. We will also explore Khan Academy and his videos, find videos from other sources, and learn ways to create videos. Most importantly, you will see student reactions to flipping a classroom.

iPod Touches in Medieval Times - Dave Mileham (Erie 1 BOCES) and Karen Kondrick (Ripley Central School)
Participants in this workshop will learn about the Erie 1 BOCES/WNYRIC Pilot Project conducted at the Ripley School District in the Spring of 2011. The workshop will focus on the successful integration of iPod Touches in a 1-1 project based classroom. Workshop participants will be taken through the process used to plan lessons centered on the integration of Reading Fluency and the Content strand of Medieval Times in Social Studies. Included in this workshop demonstration will be all of the applications used in the classroom to create comic strips, movies and innovative ways to distribute and collect assignments to and from students.
Microsoft Mouse Mischief & Itouch Control! - Phill Miano (Erie 1 BOCES) and Steven Sabo (Tonawanda City Schools)
Mouse Mischief integrates into Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 and Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007, letting you insert questions, polls, and drawing activity slides into your lessons. Students can actively participate in these lessons by using their own mice to click, circle, cross out, or draw answers on the screen." (microsoft.com)
In this session we will overview the steps A to Z to use this amazing tool. You will be actively engaged in this session using both wireless mouse and Ipod Touches, provided. If you have an Ipod Touch or Iphone you are encouraged to bring your device. Also, you are welcome to bring your own laptop with Office 07 & Windows 7 installed and we can assist in getting you up and running with Mouse Mischief.
We will also showcase how to use the Ipod Touches as an input device letting students edit documents on your classroom screen in real time, from their desks!
